2017 Whidbey Winter Gathering

Thursday, January 26 – Sunday, January 29, 2017

Whidbey Institute on Whidbey Island, Washington

Dear Friend,

2017 is a critical year in the Decisive Decade. In addition to a global awakening to the stark realities of climate change, the need to choose love and compassion over fear and hate has never been clearer. As Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

In this disruptive moment of chaos and uncertainty, there is abundant scientific evidence that evolution favors the “survival of the kindest” rather than the “survival of the fittest.” The better angels of our nature can usher in an Age of Altruism, where selfless concern for the welfare of others fertilizes the emergence of personal and social creativity, and thriving communities.

This is why we are excited to invite you to join us for the 2017 Whidbey Winter Gathering, an invitational leadership conference imbued with a heartfelt sense of community, spirit, and service.
The Whidbey Winter Gathering will convene a diverse multigenerational group of creative leaders to:

  • Experience heart-centered community together
  • Explore how cooperation, collaboration, and embracing diversity are showing up in our own lives and around the world
  • Discover together how we might deepen our experience of love, beauty, and the interconnectedness of all life
  • Harness the power of altruism, kindness and compassion to create a peaceful, brighter world

We want you to be a part of this community conversation. And we guarantee that this will be a Better Party! For four days we will be immersed in the spectacular natural beauty of Whidbey Island, and nurtured by the magical place that is the Whidbey Institute. Please join us for some “serious fun!”

About the Whidbey Winter Gathering

The Gathering is part exploration of ideas and strategies and part winter holiday.  It brings together a vibrant, diverse group of movers and shakers, social entrepreneurs, educators, healers, artists, and thinkers to explore social transformation and human consciousness.

STRUCTURE: Operating on the principle that creativity at conferences often happens over tea or in the hallways, as well as in workshops, the Gathering has a flexible structure with plenty of time for informal conversation, creative expression, and fun.

  • Morning plenary sessions feature dynamic, interactive presentations by social entrepreneurs, innovators, and artists from a variety of disciplines.
  • The afternoons are self-organized open space — participants share their work and ideas with each other in simultaneous sessions. Afternoons also afford time for walking the Chinook lands, creative arts, and the like.
  • In the evenings we do our very best to experience collective joy through group singing, storytelling, theater improv, dancing and a fantastic open mic.

***Special StoryDome Sessions*** During the Gathering you will have an opportunity to experience the StoryDome* —an immersive dome theater. You’ll be taken on a wondrous journey to the farthest reaches of the known universe and back. This awe-inspiring guided tour of the universe will help to broaden and deepen our conversations (see

HELP US EXPAND OUR COMMUNITY: The more diverse our community, the more we get to learn from each other. Please help us in achieving this important goal by letting us know about dynamic and diverse leaders from the Salish Sea bioregion you think should attend.

COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: There are many wonderful leaders with unique gifts and wisdom who require scholarship support in order to attend the Gathering.  Need-based scholarships help us to support people of color, young people, creators, artists, change-makers and visionaries with limited financial resources. You can help a person in need of financial support attend by adding any size donation to your $275 tuition. Please give generously. You will receive a letter acknowledging your tax deductible donation. Thank you!
REGISTRATION: The 2017 Winter Gathering begins at dinner on Thursday, January 26 and ends at lunchtime on Sunday, January 26. The Gathering always fills quickly, so make your reservation soon.

TUITION COST for the conference is $275. The Whidbey Institute offers delicious gourmet natural foods and a range of accommodations. Lodging is available for $150 for the weekend, and meals for $155 (or on a per meal basis).

CONTACT US WITH YOUR QUESTIONS OR IDEAS: Please feel free to email us. If you know someone who should be invited, let us know, and we will extend an invitation.

The youngest children have a great capacity for empathy and altruism. There’s a recent study that shows even 14-month-olds will climb across a bunch of cushions and go across a room to give you a pen if you drop one.
